About Us
After many years travelling the world and nearly a decade living in the Middle East, my husband Adam and I returned to Australia determined to make a sea change! While at home and living in Agnes Waters/1770 a friend proposed that she and I offer Madagascan bags at the local markets. I fell in love with these wonderful bags instantly and relished the happiness they brought to our customers.
By purchasing a Sissy bag product you are helping to give back to the people of Madagascar and their families. This year Sissy bags is focused on helping the Arnuad Guesry Foundation which provides for the deserted children of Madagascar. The bags are made predominantly from the leaves of the Raffia palm tree. The raffia is purchased, washed by hand in a stream and then tinted – all using traditional methods. The raffia is then handwoven into sheets that are next hand sewn into bags. The making of a bag is time consuming and has multiple stages. The Madagascans also use Bozaka straw, Sisal and Zebu (Cow Horn) in some of their products.
Every product is precious and we hope you love them as much as we do. Madagascan weavers are superstars!
